Social experiences are among the most widely used XR applications, with VRChat regularly exceeding 120,000 concurrent users on weekends. Unlike traditional VR platforms, VRChat’s content is entirely user-generated—its immersive spaces, called worlds, are built in Unity and uploaded by creators from around the globe.
Think of VRChat as the YouTube of VR, a platform that democratizes creation, allowing anyone to become a world-builder. This open, indie-driven approach fosters a diverse ecosystem of worlds that serve countless communities, unconstrained by the limits of traditional app stores. The artistic and experimental freedom in VRChat has led to worlds being recognized at major film festivals like SXSW, Venice Immersive, and Raindance Immersive, the latter of which primarily takes place within VRChat.
Like social media, social VR reflects the full spectrum of human interaction—from breathtaking creativity to unpredictable, troll-like behavior. It’s important to remember that the people you meet in VRChat are real, and experiences can vary. If you’re new to the platform, our monthly Community Meet-ups and regular World Hops offer a great way to start your VRChat adventure in a welcoming and curated environment.
